Letting Off Steam: Sep 2020

WELCOME

Thanks and welcome to everyone who has subscribed since the last newsletter. All your support it greatly appreciated.

It’s September 1st and time has flown since our last newsletter with all the work to get book 3 of the Chronicles of the Fallen novella complete plus a compilation of volumes 1-3 too.

For all you Steampunk fans, the good news is as of October I’ll be starting Fogbound book 2 full time, with the intention of a release date sometime in Apr-Jun of 2021. So if you’ve been waiting for the ongoing adventures of Simmons and Bazalgette, then they are on their way.

CHRONICLES OF THE FALLEN NEWS

Are you ready for Book 3 in the Chronicles of the Fallen? I certainly hope so as it launched on Amazon yesterday.

If you’ve already read The Crowman and Babylon and fancy some more Weird Western Dark Fantasy then head over and pick up your copy here: viewbook.at/revelations

If you’ve not read any of this nine novella series, then grab a copy of the new 3 volume compilation of Chronicles of the Fallen now. viewbook.at/chronicles1-3

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN SEPTEMBER?

So if you’re wondering what I am up to through September, the main answer is writing a screenplay for The Crowman.

Yeah, I have a chance to tender for a TV series with the start of my Chronicles of the Fallen Weird Western.

Now I’m no expert in the screenwriting scene, though I’ve produced a few and love the style of writing. If it gets picked up we could be looking at the prospect of something on the TV and if I’m really lucky that could include players like Netflix and Amazon – so just a little excited at the idea.

I am under no delusion though – this is a big ask for something of this style to get optioned, especially with talk of reduced casts and easier to film locations and lower special effects budgets – but you’ve gotta give it a go, right? And the good news is that fantasy + sci-fi is big on those channels at the moment along with other big players like HBO – so you need to be in it – to win it.

Watch this space – and I’ll obviously keep you all updated as soon as more information comes to light.

AND FINALLY…

Thanks for your continued support throughout these troubled times, it’s great hearing from you about both new work and old so keep on reading and feel free to reach out on social media – I love to discuss my books and characters and hear your thoughts on them.

Thank you for letting me share my worlds with you and the characters that inhabit them. It is truly an honour.
Keep reading and keep safe wherever you are in the world.

Gareth

Reviews

I know I keep on about leaving reviews, but it is the lifeblood for indie authors especially those selling on Amazon. In competition with the vast number of books there, good reviews help people make the decision to purchase one book over another.

So, if you have enjoyed any of my books, please leave a review if you can – it is really appreciated – and please tell everyone you know who might like the books about them. Reviews can be left at Amazon US or UK and at Goodreads.com

And Finally…

War of the Worlds finally arrives on the BBC.

The long awaited TV adaptation of HG Wells’ sci-fi classic finally arrived on the BBC and I have quite enjoyed it so far. I know there has been some backlash for changes made from the original story by some across the internet, but other than my misgivings that it wasn’t set in 1899, it’s been OK and I’ve enjoyed it.

I particularly liked the flash forwards to the ruined London in swathes of red dust – but I am somewhat biased with that being the setting for my novel Fogbound.

The War of the Worlds

It’s #FogboundFriday again and here’s all the latest news regarding what’s happening in my world of Writing..

A Quick Update

Fogbound: Empire in Flames continues to plod along nicely – we just hit 30,000 page reads on Kindle Unlimited.

I am in the process of outlining book 2 as we speak – looks like it might be quite a bit darker! I have a very rough outline of book 3, but it isn’t much more than the start and end at the moment and several key scenes I want to include. All that will change as I get closer to the end of writing Book 2.

The working title for book 2 is Fogbound: Empire in Ashes but that’s by no means final.
If you have any good ideas, then feel free to let me know your thoughts either through email, facebook or twitter.

Talking of which I’m thinking of starting a Fogbound Group on Facebook for all sorts of Q+A and comments about the book, the world setting etc. Let me know if that is something you’d be interested in.

Fallen Angels
Over the weekend when my collection of short stories was available for free on Amazon we received 2,500 downloads, which was pretty cool.

My thanks to any of you who signed up on the mailing list from that promotion and hopefully you will go on to like my other work – currently the steampunk epic – Fogbound: Empire in Flames, but there are new things stirring which I’ll talk about next.

BADLANDS Book 1 – The Crowman
This is the new project that I’ve been working on over the last couple of weeks. A series of Novella length books in a Western setting. When I say Western, be thinking gunslingers, cattle barons, rocky deserts and all that comes with that genre, BUT add in a heavy dash of supernatural, dark fantasy, technology from a lost age – and you’ll be somewhere close.

I was aiming for something like Deadwood meets Supernatural with a hint of the classic spaghetti westerns. Hardy folk making Faustian bargains in a world long after The Burning where pockets of civilisation exist between vast deserts of wilderness and Badlands.

I’m editing book 1 at the moment, but already have ideas for another two and at around 30,000 words each, they shouldn’t take too long before they are available for you folks.

So buckle on your gun-belt, keep those hellfire rounds dry and always remember to carry those bone charms – you never know when you might need protection from the weird that stalks the Badlands.

Latest Reviews

Fogbound continues to garner great new reviews as shown below.

What a great idea for a novel!
Brilliant adventure and a marvellous, inventive setting. The characters are believable and interesting and the plot rockets along. Really enjoyed it!”

The talents of this author shine in his debut novel through the tangible world building and bevy of fascinating characters.
We are thrown into a post-apocalyptic alternate London whose Queen Victoria lost the battle against Martian invaders. It’s a post-apocalyptic world, though, so the invaders are long gone, leaving behind devastation and strange plant life to trouble the survivors.”

At last! I’ve been hanging out for a really great Steampunk novel for a long time now, and by crikey this is it.
This book has everything. Not only does it bring together practically every SP icon, but it’s put together seamlessly. Well written, with a fluid style that allows the story to burble along at a smooth and constant pace, and I love the vein of understated humor that runs throughout.
Great characters, great story-line, this one had me keen to get into it every morning (and for me that is the sign of a truly good book). I can’t recommend this highly enough. If you like SP do yourself a favour and grab a copy.”

The premise of War of the Worlds meets Steampunk is what drew me to this book, and I wasn’t disappointed. The action was pretty much non-stop, and the plot twists were always interesting.”

And Finally…

They’re coming!
The War of the Worlds finally arrives on TV

The long awaited TV adaptation of HG Wells’ sci-fi classic will be aired very soon (October 2019). This collaboration between the BBC and HBO brings the tale much closer to the book’s original timeline in the late Victorian era.

An Edwardian timeline will still give that feel of desperation in the gulf of technology available to try and repel the Martian Invaders.
Check out the trailer here: YouTube Trailer

Thanks to the BBC + HBO for their excellent timing as this is the backstory to my book Fogbound: Empire in Flames so maybe we might see a bit of a boost in sales as people find a new novel that touches on the destruction left after the invasion? Fingers crossed.

Fogbound & Kindle Unlimited?

It’s #FogboundFriday again (Well to be honest it’s a day late, so technically it must be #SteampunkSaturday right?) Whichever it is, there is plenty of news on the Fogbound front for you in this post.

FOGBOUND on Kindle Unlimited

Fogbound has just hit 12,500 page reads on KU! Wow, I’m really amazed that this has taken off like this in just 3 weeks since launch.

Thanks to all you readers for around the globe that have picked up Fogbound to read through your KU accounts. The core readership is, as expected, in the US and the UK, but we also have splendid folk from Canada, Germany and Italy enjoying some Steampunk adventure too.

** Please note as an affiliate I receive a small payment for introducing any of you who decide to sign up – you pay the same amount, so it costs you nothing, but it adds a few pennies to the coffers of this poor struggling author – every little bit helps.

FOGBOUND Reviews

Another couple of five-star reviews are in for Fogbound on Amazon, thanks so much to everyone who leaves a review – at the sake of sounding like a steam-parrot – Please leave a review once you have completed reading Fogbound to allow other potential readers to make an informed decision based on the views of other Steampunk fans.

This is an interesting take on a possible history post HG Wells.
Without giving anything away it’s worth reading if you enjoy science fiction mixed with history.”

This is a very vivid book which sends the reader to the heart of this atmospheric world. The characters are vibrant and engaging and the pace of the narrative makes it a page turner. It has totally hooked me in to this genre. Mr Clegg is a very talented writer and I can’t wait to see more of his work.”

Fogbound launch day

It’s #FogboundFriday again, and one week on since the launch of my steampunk epic FOGBOUND: Empire in Flames.

FOGBOUND Launch News

So the question on all your lips is no doubt – How did it go on the 8th August?

Quite well is the humble answer. I was mightily impressed with the sales of the ebook, and also the Kindle Unlimited reads are now starting to stack up.

Notable Occurrences

  • We hit number 2 on the US Hot New Releases chart for Steampunk. (Not just the UK which was mighty impressive)
  • We also hit number 2 on the UK Hot New Releases chart for Alternative History.
  • And number 6 Best Seller in the Steampunk genre
  • I was briefly an Amazon #1 Best Selling Author when the book was mistakenly entered into the Childrens Steampunk category – Not sure if that really counts as it was supposed to be in the YA section…

FOGBOUND Reviews

I’ve finally had a few reviews trickle through from readers and they are all mighty fine. I’m really happy with quality of review I’ve received so far. It’s a little slow, only five so far, but they are all stonking five-star reviews which I’ll show you below.

Please leave a review once you have completed reading Fogbound to allow other potential readers to make an informed decision based on the views of other Steampunk fans.

The success of indie authors depends a lot on getting high quality, honest reviews of their work – so please leave a review on both Amazon and on Goodreads.com.

You don’t have to leave a literary masterpiece espousing you knowledge of all things steam, punk and dystopian. A simple click on the star review to show how much you enjoyed the book is great. If you wish to tell others how you felt about the book, then that’s even better and is much appreciated.

Kindle Unlimited

As mentioned earlier FOGBOUND is also available to read for free through Kindle Unlimited – Amazon’s reading subscription service. Instead of paying for each eBook you want to read, you pay a monthly fee and then can read as much as you like for no further cost. KU has a selection of millions of books from all genres, so there’s definitely something for everyone.

So What Now?

FOGBOUND: Empire in Flames is available for UK £1.99 or US $2.99 through Amazon so please take a look if you haven’t already as it will be going up to the full price of £3.99/$4.99 shortly.

#Steampunk #Fogbound #FogboundFriday

Tea minus five days to Amazon launch on 8th Aug.

It’s #FogboundFriday again, and less than six days to the launch of my steampunk epic FOGBOUND: Empire in Flames. Exciting and surprisingly busy times.

FALLEN ANGELS

It’s all go here at Clegg Towers in the final few days before the book launch on the 8th. While I was thinking about what I could give to all you lovely folks who sign up to my Mailing List, or who support me on Patreon, I had an epiphany. Rather than just a short story about Fogbound happenings before Empire in Flames is set, I thought why not a more encompassing look at all my writing?

With this idea in mind, I produced FALLEN ANGELS. It’s a compilation of short stories, flash fiction, and yes – even poetry! (but with my usual dark twist to it all ;o).

You can purchase it on Amazon in either eBook or Paperback format, OR you can get it for FREE if you sign up to the mailing list or pledge your support to my Patreon community.

Either way, it is a collection of 19 short pieces for fans of all things Science Fiction, Steampunk, Cyberpunk, Fantasy and Supernatural. I’ve included Author’s notes on each piece with some insight into the stories, so I’d really love to hear your thoughts on them as several of these pieces are the embryonic beginnings for new novels. It would be fascinating to see which were your favourites just as they are in a short form, and which you’d like to see become full novels of their own.

Click on the DOWNLOAD YOUR FREE BOOK link here or in the main menu to get a free PDF copy OR pledge whatever you can on my PATREON page

OR you can get a Kindle copy for £1.99 on Amazon or a Paperback copy for £5.99. I would have liked to make the paperback cheaper, but due to the pricing and margins on Amazon for Print on Demand that’s about as low as I can go – HOWEVER this book will be available from me at upcoming Steampunk events around the UK for £5.00, and I’ll gladly sign it for you as well.

UK: Get FALLEN ANGELS on Amazon UK

US: Get FALLEN ANGELS on Amazon.com

You can also READ FOR FREE on Kindle Unlimited – this includes FOGBOUND: Empire in Flames when it launches on 8th Aug. KU is a monthly subscription service that allows you to download and read as many ebooks as you can manage during your subscription period. In the UK it’s £7.99 per month and is a brilliant service for you strong readers with access to thousands and thousands of great books by some really big names.

If you are not a KU member you can signup through this affiliate link**

** Please note as an affiliate I receive a small payment for introducing any of you who decide to sign up – you pay the same amount, so it costs you nothing, but it adds a few pennies to the coffers of this poor struggling author – every little bit helps.

So What’s the 99p/99c FOGBOUND Launch Strategy?

The idea is to hit hard on days 1 through 3, this gives the best chance of sustained impact on the top selling kindle books in my genre. If this is sustained over those few days it can make a big difference with the mighty Amazon ad engine seeing this book as saleable and adding it’s helping hand to promote a book that Amazon thinks will make it money.

So, if at all possible, please order on 8th, 9th or 10th of August with a preference of the 8th for an impact on first day sales. The 99p/99c intro price will only be available for the first FIVE days so make sure you pick it up then before it goes back up towards normal price of around £3.99 / $5.00 on the 13th Aug.

Thank you all in advance for those who purchase the eBook – you are all splendid folk and I hope you enjoy FOGBOUND: Empire in Flames.
